Do you ever imagine how nice it would be to wake up to the bleating sound of sheep grazing amongst olive tree groves – while breathing in the fresh country air of rural Portugal? For some fellow city dwelling est readers, this morning wake-up scenario is but a dream after having endured too-many-to-count sleep interrupted nights filled with breaking trams, humming traffic and buzzing helicopters overhead. Villa Extramuros situated in Arraiolos, a small city near Alentejo, Portugal, offers an ultra chic space to rest your weary head and offers a peaceful place to soothe even the even weariest of souls. This Portuguese guesthouse built by Jordi Fornells and Rolf Heinemann of Vora Arquitecture sits comfortably between Lisbon and Spain, an area well known for its unspoiled natural landscape and its fresh, clean air.
The communal living rooms of Villa Extramuros open out onto the central courtyard with the five guest suites located on the first floor – each with their own private terrace, two of which overlook the nearby Arraiolos Castle.
The guesthouse design is inspired by traditional medieval convents, while the contemporary architecture reflects the nearby Mediterranean small-village charm. We’d happily enjoy a day lounging by the pool with friends or watching a sunset after a dat spent exploring the nearby village.
The interiors include furnishings from iconic designers John Prouve, Charlotte Perriand, Marc Newson and Konstantin Grcic, as well as Pierre Paulin, Joe Colombo, and Jasper Morrison to name a few. Local Alentejan artisan carpets, blankets, and other accessories add local flavor and character with the French owners adding a touch of their Gallic charm to the mix.
Surrounded by a landscape of Cork, Oak and Olive trees, the internal living areas are hidden and protected to allow for privacy while at the same time offering luminous views of the rustic landscape. Dreamy rain showers, stunning Estemoz marble and heated floors create ultra luxurious bathrooms. Don’t know about you but we certainly wouldn’t mind a relaxing shower followed by some down time among the olive trees right about now.
