The Australian beach shack is a stalwart in the antipodean summers, where families pack up and head to the coast for a salty retreat at a familiar home, often a family beach house or annual coastal accommodation. Now one of our favourite local stylists, Simone Haag, has celebrated the humble beach abode with her latest renovation project, an overhaul of beloved family property ‘Anglers Shack’. After spending many a weekend over the years at the Philip Island cottage, Haag and her husband Rhys purchased the home from his parents and set to work adapting the 1960s shack to a modern beachside retreat.

Haag took advantage of the home’s existing simple structure and focused the renovation on the cosmetic instead; building a deck to expand the outdoor living space, relining many of the interior walls and upgrading some key kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Timber panelling brought a fresh texture to the living room, bedroom and bathroom, whilst tiling up to the ceiling in the kitchen helps seperate this area from the rest of the communal front living space.

Haag has also applied her magpie’s eye for sourcing and curating to an eclectic range of furniture, lighting and art that give the home a refreshed personality. Using the original Carl Hansen tangerine timber dining chairs as a starting point mixed with Ilse Crawford's Sinnerlig Collection for Ikea, Haag developed a charcoal, olive and tangerine colour palette that plays out throughout the many vintage and globally sourced finds. Haag’s own favourite item? A set of low slung lounge chairs from the Stockholm Furniture Fair that we think look like the perfect pieces to slouch back into with a good book in hand.

Philip Island is a classic Australian summer destination, and Angler’s Shack manages to pull off a clever feat in both celebrating the Aussie beach shack and injecting a new aesthetic to the family beach house. Accommodating up to 12 people, it looks just perfect for lazy summer holidays or a long weekend retreat any time of the year. You can your own beach side stay at Angler's Shack through AirBnB.
