A Stone House in Brittany

Ten years ago, 3 friends arrived as tourists to admire the coastline of Fréhel in Brittany, France. Today they find themselves very much ensconced as somewhat 'local weekend commuters' in their newly renovated 'Breton' stone house nestled amongst the cedar and apple trees. Built in 1927, this original stone house was extended in 2014 with a contemporary steel and glass cube addition while the fortuitous purchase of the neighbouring field has ensured that the view of rolling green fields will never be built out.

As one of the three owners of this country retreat, architect Jean-Luc Etienne chose to completely flip the original layout of the house and designed a glass extension so as to invite the outdoors in. Spread over two floors, the 4 bedroom, two bathroom weekend retreat has been reconfigured to house an open plan kitchen and living area with panoramic views of the surrounding forest and exposure to the salty sea air whenever the strong coastal winds blow.

The foundation of the modern interior began with the decision to install a matte black Vipp kitchen spotted by one of the owners while on a business trip to Copenhagen. With the architects seal of approval the kitchen was purchased and shipped to France for installation. "As an architect I'm passionate about good quality materials, and I couldn't resist the 4 mm massive stainless steel tabletop," Jean-Luc explains.

Famous for the fresh sea produce on offer, Brittany makes it easy for even the basic of cooks to look good in the kitchen. A Vipp kitchen, on the other hand, makes an apprentice look like they are head chef at Noma.
